MICHAEL THOMSON
Assistant Director for Speed, Strength and Conditioning
Michael Thomson joined the Coastal Carolina University athletics department as an assistant director of speed, strength and conditioning in February 2023. He works directly with the baseball and golf programs.
Thomson came to Coastal after working over two years as a strength and conditioning coach in the Baltimore Orioles organization. He worked specifically with the Orioles' Rookie League in 2021, their High-A team in 2022, and most recently with their Double-A team in 2023.
For his work, he was named the 2021 Florida Coast League Strength Coach of the Year (PBSCCS).
During that time, he coordinated offseason programming between the performance staff and the players, led collaborative hitting and pitching developmental camps, and led initiatives with GPS and Vald technologies leading to an improved structure of daily and weekly speed training allocation. He also collaborated extensively with the organization’s pitching department to develop a model utilizing biomechanics data to enhance in-season pitching performance, including improvements in pitching velocity as well as consistency, stamina, and recovery.
Prior to his time in professional baseball, Thomson worked at Clemson as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for a spring season in 2021 in which he worked with the baseball and men's soccer programs.
