    Head Coach

    Member of Coastal’s Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame. Played for Coastal Carolina as a catcher from 1995-99. 
    2025 was his rookie year as head coach where he was named Baseball America’s Coach of the Year, ABCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. He lead the Chanticleer’s to a record breaking season of 56-13. A season that landed Coastal back in the finals at the College World Series in Omaha. 
    “Kevin Schnall is a huge part of our program’s success, both as a player and a coach,” head coach Gary Gilmore said. “He epitomized the type of player we strive to mold here. As a coach, his track record for hitting instruction and teaching the catcher position is unmatched. Also, his passion for the game and Coastal Carolina University is abundantly clear to everyone he meets which makes him one of the top recruiters in the nation.”
    Served as assistant coach for 12 years (2001-12) then returned to the Chanticleer baseball staff as the associate head coach in July of 2015.
    Schnall, a standout catcher in his own right with the Chanticleers, instructed catchers Dock Doyle (2008 Big South Player of the Year) and Jose Iglesias (third-team All-American in 2010), both of whom were finalists for the Johnny Bench Award which is given to the nation’s top collegiate catcher. In his final year at Coastal in 2012, Schnall coached Chanticleer backstop, Tucker Frawley, to semifinalist status for the same award. We now can add another name to this outstanding list Caden Bodine who is the 2025 Buster Posey award winner & First Team All-American.

  • CHAD OXENDINE

    Associate Head Coach & Recruiting Coordinator

    Oxendine returns to his alma mater (a decorated catcher from 2001-04) after spending the past three seasons as the head coach at Longwood. Oxendine served as the director of baseball of operations at Coastal before being promoted to director of player development, operations, and analytics.
    "Simply put, Ox is one of the best leaders to ever wear the Coastal uniform, and his impact on our program will be immense for years to come. His love for Coastal is unmatched, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him back.” Schnall stated
    During his last stint at Coastal Carolina, Oxendine contributed to Sun Belt tournament championships in 2018 and 2019, both of which sent the Chanticleers to NCAA Regionals. In 2018, his first year at Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers went 43-19 overall and 23-7 in their first year in the Sun Belt Conference. 
    Oxendine has been a part of three 40-win teams in his career, as well as the winningest team in Longwood baseball's Division I era, which was the 2016 Lancers' 32-win campaign. He served as Longwood's top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under former head coach Ryan Mau that season, which saw the Lancers go 32-27 overall and 14-10 in Big South play en route to a tie for second place in the final league standings.

  • MATT WILLIAMS

    Assistant Baseball Coach / Pitching

    Matt Williams in his first year as the new pitching coach for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers after spending last season at South Carolina. 
    Williams has seen 35 pitchers sign professional contracts while five of his former pitchers have gone on to pitch in the majors. During his time as a pitching coach, he has had four pitchers go on to win Conference Pitcher of the Year and numerous others go on to earn All-Conference honors. 
    Williams, who has spent 19 years as a collegiate pitching coach, worked at South Carolina for one year after four seasons as the associate head coach/pitching coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. Under Williams' tutelage, the Flames advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2021 and 2022, advancing to the final of the 2021 Knoxville Regional and playing in the 2022 Gainesville Regional. In his first full season at Liberty in 2021, the Flames were 41-16, setting a school record for winning percentage at the Division I level. 
    Williams began his coaching career assisting Tim Wallace (Spartanburg Methodist Head Coach) with Spartanburg American Legion Post 28 where they went on to win two state championships and have two regional appearances in three years as an assistant. Williams spent one summer as the Head Coach of Post 28 helping led them to a playoff berth. In the summers Williams also helped coach two summers with the South Carolina-based Diamond Devils Travel Team. 

  • MATT SCHILLING

    Assistant Baseball Coach

    Matt Schilling, who played at Coastal Carolina from 1993-94 and served as an assistant coach for the Chants from 1995-00, returned to his alma mater to serve as a volunteer assistant baseball coach in the summer of 2012. Schilling is in his 11th season in his second stint on the Chanticleer staff.
    Schilling coaches the infielders and works with the hitters, as well as serving as the director of the Chanticleer Baseball Camps.
    Coastal’s infielders ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA in double plays turned in 2015 (66), 2016 (66), 2020 (22), 2022 (54), and 2023 (58). Chants have led the conference in double plays turned six times over the last 10 years (2013, 2015, 2016, 2020, 2022, and 2023) and ranked second twice (2017 and 2018). Helped lead CCU to five regular-season conference championships (1999, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2025) as a coach and one as a player (1993).Part of four conference tournament championship titles – 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2025 as a coach.
    As a student-athlete at Coastal, Schilling played for then-head coach John Vrooman and led the team in hitting in both 1993 (.331) and 1994 (.356). Schilling earned first-team All-Big South honors as a second baseman in 1994 and was a nominee for the Rotary Smith Award, which goes to the nation's top collegiate player. In 1993, he helped the Chants win the Big South regular-season championship.
    After his playing days, Schilling was an assistant for coach Vrooman for one season and stayed on for the first four seasons of the Gary Gilmore 
    Schilling came to Coastal after two years at Mercer (N.J.) Community College, where he was a two-time Junior College All-Region performer in baseball. He was the captain of Mercer's 1991 national championship soccer team and earned All-Region goalkeeping honors in 1990.
